Marijampolė

Marijampolė takes its name from the Virgin Mary — Marijos polė, "Mary's town." Countess Butler prayed the Rosary by the Šešupis river, and where her prayers ended she had a church and monastery built for the Marian Fathers. The town that grew around it took the Virgin's name — the only Lithuanian city to bear a religious order's, and through it the Virgin's, name.

Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius (1871–1927) is the reason pilgrims come. Born in the village of Lūginė five kilometres north, he revived the dying Marian order in secret, served as Bishop of Vilnius, and lies buried in the basilica's chapel. Pope John Paul II beatified him and called him "a man of God's heart."

The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel holds his tomb in a side chapel, where pilgrims leave notes of petition and thanksgiving on the sarcophagus. The Marian monastery next door houses a museum of his life. Five kilometres north, a chapel marks the field where he was born.

📜 History & Spiritual Significance

In 1750 Countess Butler invited a Marian priest to Starapolė, the settlement on the Šešupis. She built a church and monastery, and the Marians were solemnly installed in the new church in 1758. The growing settlement took the Virgin's name — Marijampolė, Mary's town. The monastery became the motherhouse of the Marian Fathers in Lithuania, and the order gave the town both its spiritual identity and its name.

The Marijampolė monastery was the only Marian house to survive the suppressions that followed the uprisings against Russian rule. Many monks left for abroad or were exiled to Siberia. When the tsarist authorities closed the monastery, only a few aged members remained. One of them was the last Marian prior, Father Vincentas Senkus, whose death would open the way for the order's revival.

Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius was born on 13 April 1871 in Lūginė village, five kilometres north of Marijampolė, the youngest of eight children in a farming family. His parents died when he was about ten. He was baptised at the parish church in Marijampolė — the church the Marian order managed — and learned the faith in catechism classes from Father Jurgis Cešnas. From the age of fifteen he suffered bone tuberculosis — weakness in his right arm and leg, at times on crutches — a condition that stayed with him for life.

He studied in Kielce and Warsaw, earned a master's degree at the Saint Petersburg theological academy, and was ordained a priest. His bishop sent him to Fribourg in Switzerland for doctoral work. There, outside Russian borders, he became convinced that religious orders were the best instrument for a cultural and spiritual revival of the Lithuanian nation. He travelled home to Marijampolė to discuss with one of the last surviving Marians the possibility of a secret revival.

The renewal took place in hiding. With papal approval of a new constitution, Matulaitis took his vows as a professed member of the order in secret. When the last Marian prior died, a meeting elected Matulaitis Superior-General — at which point the order consisted of him and two other priests. He resigned his teaching position, reclaimed the old properties, and established new houses in Poland, Switzerland, and Chicago.

In 1918 he returned to Lithuania and restored the war-damaged monastery in Marijampolė. That same year he founded the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and was consecrated Bishop of Vilnius. His diocese sat at the heart of the conflict between Lithuanians and Poles, and he served with pastoral devotion, healing historical wounds. Pope Pius XI later relieved him of the diocese and appointed him Apostolic Visitator to Lithuania, where he worked to establish the church province and prepare the concordat with the Holy See.

He died in Kaunas on 27 January 1927. Pilgrims had begun coming to his tomb to ask for favours through his intercession, and notes of gratitude accumulated on the sarcophagus. In 1934 his remains were transferred from Kaunas to the chapel of the basilica in Marijampolė, where they rest beside the baptismal font at which he was baptised. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1987 in Saint Peter's Basilica and called him "a man of God's heart."

Liturgical Memorial of Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis — 27 January

The date he died. Believers celebrate his birth to heaven on this day with prayer and Mass at the basilica.

Beatification Anniversary Feast — July (week containing 12 July)

A weeklong solemn celebration of the anniversary of his beatification, held each July. The feast includes the possibility to gain an indulgence on 12 July, as well as on the Sunday before and the Sunday after. A novena is prayed asking Blessed Jurgis to intercede on behalf of the sick. Pilgrims come from Lithuania and neighbouring countries, especially Poland.

Monthly Mass — 12th of each month

Mass is celebrated at midday on the 12th of every month in the Chapel of Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis, in his honour. Mass is also celebrated in the chapel every Friday for various intentions. During liturgical services, approved prayers are said, including the Litany of Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis, a prayer for health, and a prayer for his canonisation.

By Train: Marijampolė railway station, Stoties g. 2, with passenger services on the Kaunas–Marijampolė and Vilnius–Kraków lines.

By Bus: Marijampolė bus station, Stoties g. 2B, with suburban routes serving surrounding villages including Šunskai, where Lūginė is located.

By Car: On the A28 highway (Via Baltica); the highway exit is 5 km from the city centre. The historic St. Petersburg–Warsaw road passes through Marijampolė.
